2015 Colorado Scholastic Team Chess Championship
The second K-12 Colorado Scholastic Team Chess Championship tournament was hosted on March 21, 2015 at the beautiful north campus of Westwood College, centrally located in Denver, Colorado. Even though the event was scheduled during the Spring Break (to avoid conflicts with regional scholastic chess events), we still had a great turnout! 14 top teams from 5 regions in Colorado (Colorado Springs, Denver Central, Denver North, Fort Collins, and Boulder) competed in the three sections (high, middle and elementary schools sections) of the tournament. We added one more region from last year's tournament. We would like to welcome our new Central Denver region coordinated by Todd Bardwick, a long time scholastic chess activist from the Denver area. Thanks to Lawrence Beshear, this year, games of the top boards in each section were electronically transmitted and projected into the skittles room where IM Michael Mulyar and Peter Wise commentated during the games. There were total of 63 scholastic players in the tournament. 26 of them are new CSCA and USCF members. We would like to welcome these newcomers. In fact, Zachary Bekkedahl, our state scholastic coordinator, welcomed all the new chess players by offering them free USCF memberships. We wish all of them the best in our wonderful Colorado chess community.
This is a one-day, invitation only tournament. USCF and CSCA memberships are required. More information about the tournament is posted on the about page.
Acknowledgements
As always, this tournament was only made possible from the following generous contributions across Colorado:
  • Firstly, thanks go to Westwood College and their president, Daniel Snyder, for their generous sponsorship. They have provided us with many spacious rooms including two play rooms, skittles room, registration room and break room. They have also provided WiFi for everyone. All of these were at no cost to us.
  • Thanks to IM Michael Mulyar and Peter Wise for providing live game commentating through out the entire tournament day.
  • Thanks go to Lawrence Beshear and Zhongming Chen for setting up digital chess board, game transmitting, projection and play room tables and chairs.
  • Thanks go to Peter Wise for taking professional photo pictures for the tournament.
  • Thanks go to Brad Lundstrom for helping TD-ing the tournament.
  • Special thanks go to our regional coordinators: Todd Bardwick, Zachary Bekkedahl, Jesse Cohen, Michael Mulyar and Lee Simmons for hosting regional qualification tournaments and selecting their top teams for our state tournament.
  • Finally, the ultimate success of the tournament attributes to all of players and parents for their support of this tournament. It was truly a statewide team effort that made this tournament possible and successful.
If you have any suggestions or guidance on how to improve this tournament in the future, please, let Jackson or Zach know. Jackson's email address is jackson@chenjackson.com, and Zach's email address is info@chessmatesfc.com. They would really appreciate it. They hope to see you all again next year.
